The plea made by Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri to fans to pay off the HMRC debt has been called ‘unusual’ by EFL chief Rick Parry.
Chansiri had previously pleaded to the Sheffield Wednesday fans, asking if 20,000 fans could each pay £100 to pay off the club’s HMRC bill, which stood at £2 million.
This plea caused outrage amongst the Owls fanbase, with in the end it being paid off by Chansiri himself.
Parry on ‘unusual’ Chansiri

Speaking at the launch of the EFL and SkyBet’s Building Foundations initiative on Wednesday via The Yorkshire Post, Parry said that the club is ‘meeting its obligations’.
“As far as we’re concerned the club is meeting its obligations, that is the most important thing. For all the fears; paying the players, paying the taxman, that’s the starting point from our point of view. It does highlight what we’ve been saying for three years, we’re pushing to make clubs sustainable.”
Speaking on the plea made by Dejphon Chansiri, Parry commented on it being ‘unusual’.
“It was unusual, but we have got a broad church, a wide variety of different owners. Is it something that on reflection he might regret? Who knows. It’s obviously him expressing his frustration and I guess in a way showing that he also actually cares.”
EFL will surely keep closer eye on Wednesday
Whilst Parry’s words will not bring much confidence surrounding a potential change in ownership at Wednesday that fans desire, it’s important to note that he does recognise the situation.
He is right in saying the plea made by Chansiri was ‘unusual’, so hopefully the Thai businessman will not be asking if anything similar from the Wednesday fans anytime soon.
