Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has slammed Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri. The controversial person in charge of the Owls has been responsible for a catalogue of errors lately and is now refusing to back the club.
On the pitch, things improved for Wednesday yesterday. Danny Rohl oversaw a first Championship win of the season for the Owls as they defeated Rotherham 2-0 at Hillsborough.
Michael Smith scored twice against the side he used to play for during yesterday’s win. It gave Wednesday something to build on and Rohl will be hoping that his team can keep improving.
Maguire takes aim at Wednesday owner Chansiri
The Wednesday owner is refusing to put any additional into the football club from this point. As a result, it was announced last week that the club are once again under an embargo for a late payment to the HMRC.
Maguire is a respected figure in the world of football finance. He’s written two books regarding the sport and the owners that currently work in the game are often a hot topic of discussion when he’s around.
On this week’s The Price of Football podcast, Maguire was quizzed on who he thought were the three clubs or owners currently giving him concern. Wednesday cropped up and he doesn’t sound too hopeful.
He said on the podcast: “Sheffield Wednesday are second on my list. They are bottom of the Championship which doesn’t help things from a fan point of view and they’ve also now been given an embargo by the EFL as a result of non-payment to HMRC.
“The owner there Chansiri is the one who threw his toys out of the pram, basically saying if you start criticising me I’m not going to put any more money in. That’s not a custodian. It’s not a person who has the best interests of Sheffield Wednesday at heart. I’ve named three clubs there of whom I have the greatest concern with regards to their immediate futures.”
Something has to give at Wednesday
As Maguire alludes to, if Chansiri isn’t going to put any money into the club, he’s not acting with the club at heart. The fans deserve that and they will remain in place long after the current owner has gone.
Wednesday is a huge football club. Several thousands of fans come to Hillsborough in their droves every week and ultimately they deserve better than how the current owner is using the club.
On the pitch, it was great to see Wednesday get that first win of the campaign ticked off. Away from it, however, there are still problems to resolve. Hopefully, the peaceful protests against Chansiri can continue to take place.
