Journalist Dom Howson has revealed the impressive thing that Dejphon Chansiri has done at Sheffield Wednesday this season.
Chansiri has certainly been the villain at Sheffield Wednesday this season.
It all kick-started when the club lost Darren Moore at the start of the summer, just a few weeks after the Owls earned promotion from League One.
The horror appointment of Xisco Munoz followed, then came the string of club statements and the public fall out with Moore, and ultimately, the formation of The 1867 Group.
Fans’ patience with Chansiri has reached an all-time low this season.
But Chansiri attended the game at Hillsborough last weekend, watching Danny Rohl and his players earn a monumental 3-0 win over West Brom.
The Owls now sit in 20th place of the Championship table and are three points above the drop zone ahead of their final day clash at Sunderland this weekend.
And it turns out that Chansiri may be due a bit of praise for one thing this season, and it’s not hiring Rohl.
Dejphon Chansiri wanted Danny Rohl to do one thing at Sheffield Wednesday
Speaking on the We Are Sunderland podcast ahead of the weekend, journalist Dom Howson spoke about the Sheffield Wednesday back-room team, in particular Chris Powell.
Powell was one of several experienced names who joined Rohl at Hillsborough when he arrived in October.
And Powell has since become a well-liked name among Sheffield Wednesday fans.
Howson says that it was Chansiri’s idea for Rohl to have a British name on his coaching staff, saying:
“I’m led to believe that the owner, Chansiri, he was really keen for them to have a British coach as part of the set up. And it’s not unheard of or uncommon for Wednesday to have that in their nine plus years of Chansiri ownership; it was the same when they had Carlos Carvalhal, he had Lee Bullen.”
Is the tide changing for Dejphon Chansiri at Sheffield Wednesday
It’s certainly been a challenging season for Chansiri.
He’s speculated to have been in his native Thailand for the bulk of the season, only returning to Sheffield for what was Wednesday’s final home game of the season last weekend.
And many thought it was a quite daring move given the protests and the backlash aimed at him this season.
But an incident in which a fan confronted Chansiri, who then pushed him away, has actually seen a lot of Sheffield Wednesday supporters side with Chansiri.
And Howson’s revelation about Powell may show that Chansiri does, actually, have some knowledge to put into matters at the club.
Still, fans are largely against his ownership, though a strong summer, with keeping Rohl the main priority, could win Chansiri a lot of fans.
