Sheffield Wednesday have struggled this season, primarily going forward.
They sit bottom of the Championship and have scored the least amount of goals, only scoring five. The next highest is eight.
They have scored once in their last six league games, in a 1-1 draw at home to Middlesbrough. This has led under pressure manager Xisco Munoz to look to the free agent market to potentially get his side scoring goals.
The man Munoz has been looking at bringing in is former Nottingham Forest and Charlton striker Lyle Taylor.
Lyle Taylor deal decision to be made in ‘next few days’
The Montserrat international has been without a club since June after his contract expired at Forest. He had been training with Wednesday for the last few weeks, however Munoz confirmed he is no longer training with the club.
It remains to be seen whether a deal could still be done, with owner Dejphon Chansiri saying in a statement on Friday that he will no longer be putting any money into the club.
Wednesday currently only have 24 out of a possible 25 players registered, meaning there is space for one more.
Munoz confirmed the 33-year-old is not currently training with the Owls, but says a decision will be made in the ‘next few days’.
“No, he is not training with us, and we need to think about the situation,” Munoz told the Sheffield Star. “We will see what happens. We need to find exactly what we want.
“I don’t know exactly if he is what we want or what we need. We need more time – we have had a lot of games in this period.
“I know he is a very good player but we will see what happens in the next few days. We will then make a decision. We have a big problem thinking how we can improve the team in the short term, not just two, three or four weeks.”
Should Wednesday sign Lyle Taylor?
As aforementioned, Wednesday have been struggling up top so it makes sense that they would be looking to bring in some firepower.
The Owls do have plenty of options up front at the moment, with the likes of Ashley Fletcher, Michael Smith and Lee Gregory all players that can be called up on. Djeidi Gassama and Callum Paterson are also other options.
But with Gregory and Smith being the only recognised strikers scoring this season, Taylor may be worth bringing in, even if it’s only on a deal initially until January.
