One of Danny Rohl’s former no.1s could be in line to take charge of a relegation rival of Sheffield Wednesday.
Sheffield Wednesday have won their last two to reclose the gap to safety to just three points.
An impressive 3-1 win over Yorkshire rivals Hull City last time out coincided with defeats for QPR and Darren Moore‘s Huddersfield Town, handing the Owls a perfect start to 2024.
There remains a mountain to climb though, with plenty of other teams potentially coming in and out of relegation contention with Sheffield Wednesday between now and May.
And one such team is Birmingham City.
They sit in 20th and just three points ahead of Huddersfield, having recently sacked Wayne Rooney as head coach; he won just two of his 15 Championship games in charge.
And now it seems like Blues might hire a name very familiar to Rohl.
Ralph Hasenhuttl potentially linked with the Birmingham City job
Posting on X last night, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook revealed that Hasenhuttl, 56, is ready to return to the dugout after more than a year out of the game.
He was last at Southampton where he hired Rohl as his no.2 in December 2018, having previously had the Sheffield Wednesday boss as his no.2 at Red Bull Leipzig where they earned a 2nd place finish in the Bundesliga in the 2016/17 season.

Birmingham City remain an ambitious club with ambitious owners, so it’s no surprise to see managers of Hasenhuttl’s calibre being linked.
And Rohl will surely be wary of his former no.1 taking charge of a relegation rival in Birmingham City as Rohl knows exactly what Hasenhuttl is capable of in the dugout.
Currently, seven points separate Sheffield Wednesday in 22nd and Plymouth Argyle in 18th.
Whilst many are optimistic about the Owls’ survival chances this season, there’s still a lot of points to claim and a lot of teams to leapfrog, with Birmingham City being one of them.
Now though, with Birmingham City having a new manager to hire, and with the likes of Plymouth set to hire a new boss and Stoke City having recently poached Steven Schumacher from the south coast club, the likes of Rotherham United, QPR, Huddersfield, and potentially Wednesday could drift away in a scrap between the bottom four.
It’s vital that Sheffield Wednesday continue to put points on the board and drag teams like Birmingham City into the dog fight. But if Blues hire Hasenhuttl then it could see them bounce back up the table.
