Danny Rohl sends Sheffield Wednesday warning as he singles out three players who have ‘improved’

While Danny Rohl’s squad have not quite managed to put together a consistent run of form this season, the Sheffield Wednesday boss has praised three of his players that he has seen big improvements from, and fired a warning to the rest of his team to match that.

That inconsistency has been the main downfall for Sheffield Wednesday this term, with the Owls failing to win two games in a row all season.

Danny Rohl has been told his team lack the discipline to grind out results, while others have pointed to Sheffield Wednesday’s struggles in front of goal as a big issue.

Wednesday are looking to get back on track at the weekend against Cardiff City after the long international break, and Danny Rohl has been reflecting on the standards across his squad this season.

Marvin Johnson, Di’Shon Bernard among those Rohl happy with

In his latest press conference (via the Sheffield Wednesday YouTube channel) ahead of the game against Cardiff City this weekend, Rohl was eager to praise three of his players who have shown great levels of improvement this season.

“Players can be up and down and take some time to improve but I will always support them. But it’s up to the player too. It’s not always easy because of the schedule and how little training time we have.

“You look at Gabriel Otegbayo and Di’Shon Bernard who have improved very well this season. Marvin Johnson, too, who was maybe facing the end of his career last year, and now he’s doing well.”

On the flipside, Rohl acknowledged that can go through periods where they are struggling, and while he is willing to give them time to turn things around, the Sheffield Wednesday boss insisted those opportunities cannot last forever.

“They will get support and they will get chances. But, I have a squad where the majority of my players are on the right level, the same level,” Rohl added. “So it means that if you do get a chance and do not perform, you can’t always get the next chance. We have players waiting to step in and take that chance and perform.”

Danny Rohl doesn’t know his best Sheffield Wednesday XI

In many ways, the standard of quality across the whole Sheffield Wednesday squad is very equal at the moment, by and large.

Rohl has players competing for places in pretty much every position — Shea Charles and Barry Bannan are probably the only two who can say they are nearly guaranteed to start each week — and that is both a blessing and a curse.

On one hand, this competition for minutes can bring out the best in players, and show Rohl which players are going to raise the bar and take the team to the next level.

But, on the other hand, it does naturally lead to some inconsistencies and the constant chopping and changing in the lineup can be quite jarring, which perhaps explains why Sheffield Wednesday have yet to put together a strong run of form this season.

Some would say Sheffield Wednesday are underachieving this season, but there is still a long way to go this season, and if they can pick up some positive results soon, there’s no reason they can’t climb the table quickly.
