Danny Rohl has offered his verdict on the competition for Sheffield Wednesday’s No.1 spot in between the sticks.
Cameron Dawson has been with Sheffield Wednesday since he was 15 years old, before enjoying a breakthrough campaign for The Owls during the 2018-19 season.
However, the goalkeeper eventually lost his place in the team and was sent out on loan to Exeter City.
Dawson then started last season as understudy to David Stockdale, but earned a regular place in net heading into 2023.
Despite helping Sheffield Wednesday win promotion by picking up an impressive 13 clean sheets in only 22 games in League One, the summer arrival of Devis Vasquez once again forced him out of the picture.
Xisco Munoz favoured the Colombian and Dawson’s future at his boyhood club looked in doubt, but he was handed another lifeline when Danny Rohl joined the club.
The 28-year-old has since found his way back into the starting line-up, with his form looking likely to force Vasquez’s premature exit from Hillsborough.
Dawson has been praised for his performances as of late, but there is no doubt he will be feeling a bit of Deja vu following James Beadle’s loan switch from Brighton.
Dawson retained his place in the team for the 5-0 defeat to Southampton, but Danny Rohl has admitted that he isn’t guaranteed to always start over Beadle.
Speaking to The Star, the German said: “Cameron showed in the last games that he was ready and he performed well.
“I said this to my players, it’s all about performance in the training and in the games. I will decide every game view, this is my job as a manager. These are the reasons he played at Southampton and now we will see in the week how things are with the position again.”
Is Cameron Dawson about to be benched again?
Cameron Dawson particularly impressed during Sheffield Wednesday’s FA Cup win over Cardiff City, in which he saved two penalties.
His form is keeping him in the No.1 spot at the minute, but he will know that James Beadle hasn’t joined the Championship club to warm the bench.
Brighton would only send a promising youngster on loan if they were promised he would pick up some minutes, so Dawson definitely shouldn’t get too comfortable in between the sticks.
Given that Devis Vasquez clearly wasn’t fancied by Danny Rohl, it is definitely beneficial for Dawson to have some healthy competition now though. Hopefully it can improve his performances even further.
