Sheffield Wednesday have enjoyed a busy month since the transfer window opened.

The Owls have made some very exciting signings with plenty of Championship experience, such as Jamal and Max Lowe.

They have also looked to reunite with some of last season’s biggest stars such as James Beadle, Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda, with the former arriving on a second loan spell last week.

Sheffield Wednesday have also gone for the less experienced players in Olaf Kobacki and Svante Ingelsson, though the pair have proved themselves in the Polish second division and the German second division respectively.

One player who is yet to make a name for himself in senior football at all is Charlie McNeill, who has just joined on a free transfer after he was released by Manchester United.

The 20-year-old has 50 goals in 95 games in youth football, but has managed only four goals whilst on loan at Newport County and Stevenage.

Rohl tipped to get the very best out of Charlie McNeill

Danny Rohl has opted to take a chance on McNeill though and journalist Rob Staton has applauded him for it.

Speaking on the Owls Heaven podcast, Staton said: “Teams of Sheffield Wednesday’s level need to take a chance on somebody like this every year.

“Maybe a couple of players like this who have been at the bigger clubs and then their next move is to go and force a career for themselves here. He’s not ended up being a Man United player and he’s left.

“You take a chance of him because the EFL is littered full of players and maybe it’s one in 20 that end up amounting to anything, but there are some really good players who have had to take a step back, then have ended up becoming really good players and major assets because they’ve got that pedigree and that potential and it just needs the right coach to get it out of them.”

McNeill can follow in the footsteps of Di’Shon Bernard

There have been plenty of youngsters who have graduated from Premier League academies and have had to take the step down to the Championship or League One to prove themselves.

It was only a year ago that Di’Shon Bernard had just left Old Trafford after six years, racking up 60 appearances for United’s youth teams.

He went onto become one of the Owls’ most important players and Rohl is now desperate to get him tied down to a new contract.

The German is definitely the right manager to get the best out of struggling players, so fans should be eager to see what magic he can produce with McNeill.
