Sheffield Wednesday have been dealt a major fitness blow over Dominic Iorfa. The Owls defender was substituted after just four minutes of the 3-1 win over Blackburn and didn’t feature on Saturday.
Now, Iorfa might be set for a spell on the sidelines with his injury thought to be worse than first anticipated. It represents a big blow to Danny Rohl who had made the defender an integral part of his team.
The centre-back had been playing as a right-back in recent weeks. His pace up and down the right-hand side was proving a useful asset and his loss could be sorely felt.
Report provides update on Wednesday star Iorfa
The Owls have been rocked with this news that comes courtesy of The Star. It’s believed that Iorfa will now be missing for an extended period as he looks to recover.
Rohl was quizzed on Friday about Iorfa. He explained that things are looking ‘not so good’ for the player and now Wednesday will await further details over Iorfa.
Wednesday managed to get themselves a victory without Iorfa on Saturday. Liam Palmer came in at right-back and perhaps now the vice-captain will get a chance to stake his claim for a place in the team.
The manager praised the experienced Wednesday star when he was out of the team. However, it remains to be seen whether Rohl will now hand him a more prominent role in the team.
Iorfa injury is bad but Rohl now needs next man up
This is bad news, of course. Wednesday were starting to really see what Iorfa can do with an extended run in the team but now he faces a spell on the sidelines.
Iorfa has been with Wednesday since 2019 when he swapped Wolves for a move to Hillsborough. He’s made 152 appearances for the club and was an important part of the team that won promotion to the Championship last season.
It’s such a shame that he’s going to be missing for a while now. Throughout his career, he’s had several injuries and this was the first time in a while he’s had a prolonged run in the team.
Still, Rohl can’t dwell on this. Football clubs in this day and age have squads for a reason and the Wednesday man must now call on the next man up with Iorfa out injured.
