Nathaniel Chalobah became Sheffield Wednesday’s ninth signing earlier this month.
The 29-year-old had made 46 appearances in the Championship with West Brom before he was released at the end of the season.
Sheffield Wednesday then opted to snap up Chalobah on a free transfer, with their lack of defensive midfielders a real concern heading into the transfer window.
Svante Ingelsson was brought in as an option further up the pitch, while Chalobah now arrives to replace the outgoing Will Vaulks.
The Chelsea academy product had struggled for game-time at The Hawthorns, starting only seven games last season.
Despite that, Danny Rohl is confident that has lack of minutes won’t be a ‘problem’ for The Owls.
Rohl compares Chalobah to Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda
Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, the German said: “Yeah, we were looking for a number six. He showed a lot of experience. We know he didn’t play so much in the past, so I think this is also important now to give him the rhythm.
“But he had good experience, when I compare this with Ian Poveda or Ike Ugbo, even these players had not so much game time before, but it was no problem for us.
“We will help them, we will improve them day by day and yeah, hopefully he will also play a key role for us. I think especially the midfielders, we need different profiles.
“We know he has big, big experience in the Championship as well. We know he can carry the ball and we have Barry [Bannan] who can decide the rhythm of our game. I think this is at the moment very interesting.”
Why Chalobah can become a different player at Sheffield Wednesday
Chalobah failed to make much of an impact on promotion-chasing West Brom, but that isn’t to say he hasn’t racked up plenty of minutes in the Championship across his career.
Playing for the likes of the Baggies, Fulham and Watford, the midfielder has made 188 appearances in the English second division and has one promotion to his name.
Chalobah never quite lived up to the expectations placed upon him at Stamford Bridge, but Rohl has proven to be a bit of a miracle-worker when it comes to players low on confidence.
Poveda and Ugbo both failed to make a good impression at Leeds United and Cardiff City respectively, but their arrivals at Hillsborough quickly transformed them into very important players.
The success of the former loan pair should encourage fans not to judge players too quickly, because the Owls boss is capable of making Chalobah into a vital cog in his team.
That doesn’t mean Wednesday should end their business there though, as it could be very useful to bring in another defensive midfielder to add healthy competition and also more squad depth.
