Danny Rohl has issued an injury update on Sheffield Wednesday trio Will Vaulks, Callum Paterson and Akin Famewo.

Sheffield Wednesday have endured a number of injuries over the busy Christmas period, with the team really looking down to the bare bones in last night’s win over Hull City.

Danny Rohl was boosted by the registration of Momo Diaby though, who made his first appearance since suffering an injury on his debut back in August.

While they also ended 2023 with a brilliant win over Preston North End, their injury list took a further hit when both Akin Famewo and Will Vaulks were forced off in the first half.

Their starting line-up against Hull saw Liam Palmer pushed into midfield, while Michael Ihiekwe took Famewo’s place at the back.

One player that could really come in handy given his versatility is Callum Paterson, who has been sidelined since Boxing Day.

Rohl has now provided an update on all three players as they look to make their comebacks very soon.

Speaking to The Star, the German coach said: “I think Will will be out for a minimum of two weeks because he has a small injury in his muscle.

“But Akin looks good, he was not available today because it was too close, but he will not be too long before he is back.

On Paterson, Röhl said: “I think it could be that he is available for Cardiff or maybe we wait until after Cardiff. We must be careful and we will wait to have a talk with the doctors.”

How important are Famewo & Vaulks?

Sheffield Wednesday have enjoyed a really positive run of games since the start of December, picking up five wins in seven games.

Their absentees have been a blow, but it is the rest of the team that have worked really hard to keep up the consistency and pick up some vital points in their race for survival.

Injuries to Akin Famewo and Will Vaulks are a huge loss though, with both playing really well under Danny Rohl.

The latter has made the most tackles in the squad (45), while Famewo has the second-most (43). Famewo has the most interceptions (33), compared to Vaulks’ third-highest (25). Famewo has blocked the most passes (23) and Vaulks has made the second-most key passes (25).

Their importance to the team makes the win over Hull even more impressive, but hopefully they can bring them back in fairly sharpish.
