Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has claimed that Michael Smith is unlikely to return for the game against Leicester.

It’s a case of bottom against top on Wednesday evening as the Foxes arrive at Hillsborough looking to extend their lead at the summit of the Championship.

Wednesday are absolutely desperate for points and they might have to go in search of their next three without Smith.

The striker wasn’t in the squad against Birmingham at the weekend and Rohl has been quizzed on the talisman.

Smith could miss next Wednesday fixture

Wednesday beat Rotherham in their only win of the season so far and Smith came in for some praise.

On Wednesday, however, the Owls will have to do without the player with Rohl sweating over his fitness.

He told The Star: “Michael Smith was not quite ready to play. And we’re just going to have to look at him from day to day.

“It could be that he’s not available against Leicester, but this is the way. We’re just looking from day to day with this injury.”

Wednesday will be missing Josh Windass as well as Smith on Wednesday night. He picked up his fifth booking of the campaign at Birmingham on Saturday.

Wednesday have problems in attack

There are a number of factors that have contributed to Wednesday enduring a turbulent campaign and some of them have nothing to do with football.

However, one major concern is the lack of goals. The Owls have found the net just eight times in their 17 fixtures this season and that simply won’t do.

Wednesday star Smith has scored three of those goals and not having him available isn’t ideal for Rohl.

Lee Gregory has been left out of the last two matchday squads. With that in mind, it looks like Rohl is willing to place his faith in Bailey Cadamarteri.

Wednesday will hope that the £15k-a-week Smith can return to action soon. The Owls need a lift from somewhere and he is the type of player that can provide it.
