Chris Powell has been raving about one thing that Sheffield Wednesday fans did against Rotherham United.
Speaking to The Star, the Owls coach admitted that he was ‘taken aback’ by the Hillsborough support.
Chris Powell – ho has spent time in management with Charlton Athletic, Huddersfield Town and Southend United – arrived at Sheffield Wednesday following Danny Rohl‘s appointment.
The 54-year-old had spent three years with Tottenham Hotspur working with their academy, whilst also working as a coach with the England national team at the same time.
Powell then opted to leave North London in favour of becoming Danny Rohl‘s assistant coach last month and was amazed as he travelled to Hillsborough for their first home match at the weekend.
Before the Owls could even kickoff, Powell admitted that he was in love with the fans’ rendition of ‘Hi Ho Sheffield Wednesday’.
He said: “I’ve got a thing about that song. A friend of mine at Spurs, Callum, is a big Sheffield Wednesday fan and I sent it to him during the play-offs last season and where I live isn’t far from Aston Villa who sing it too. But it’s Sheffield Wednesday’s… Let’s have it right.
“I know other teams sing it like Wolves, but the noise on Sunday… I said to the staff, to Sascha (Lense), ‘Just listen to this!’ It took me aback, it was so loud. I just thought, ‘You know what, that should get us going’.
“I think the players enjoy it, and there was just a nice feeling about the place. We need to carry that on.”
Could things be on the up?
Sheffield Wednesday clearly have plenty of problems on and off the pitch at the moment, but the fans are the one thing that can never be doubted.
The supporters will always turn up in their tens of thousands and eventually they will be rewarded for that.
Things are looking slightly more positive under Danny Rohl, while Dejphon Chansiri has now paid HMRC and his staff, so now it is time to focus on football.
A win over Bristol City could completely turn things around for Sheffield Wednesday, while they will definitely need some decent form before they take on the likes of Leicester and Blackburn Rovers over the next month.
