Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson has credited Sal Bibbo after his penalty save on Saturday. The Owls star proved the hero of the hour as Wednesday beat Stoke 1-0.
Dawson guessed correctly when Ryan Mmaee was handed the chance to fire the Potters in front with 26 minutes remaining. Barry Bannan was on hand to poke the rebound over the bar.
The 28-year-old was praised by Danny Rohl after Saturday’s clash. Some negativity has surrounded the goalkeeper this season but at the moment he’s bang in form.
Dawson credits coach with huge moment
The stopper was in fine form on Saturday and richly deserved his clean sheet. Dawson stepped up when it really mattered and he’s been quizzed on the save that proved the catalyst to a Wednesday win.
He told The Star: “I’ve not actually seen it back. At the time I was obviously concentrated on catching the cross – but when he gave it, it was just a case of having a little think and going, ‘Right, this is the time now, let’s make a save.
“Credit to Sal (Bibbo), he probably goes through clips and clips and clips all week to give me a three or four-minute snippet. Thanks to him we watched them, and that’s what we felt – what we both felt – was going to happen.
“I guessed right, made the save, and then Baz managed to toe it away. We didn’t need the follow-up going in.”
Wednesday must now back Dawson
There has been some negativity this season from certain sections of the Wednesday fan base. However, he’s now showcasing just how useful he can be for the Owls.
Dawson wasn’t considered the first-choice custodian under Xisco Munoz. He was on the bench for all but one of the games managed by the Spaniard and he must have been fearing the worst.
The stopper has played in every game under Rohl, however. He’s clearly got the backing of the new manager and important saves like this one will do him no harm at all.
Wednesday have to now continue backing Dawson between the posts. Having an established number-one goalkeeper is a big thing and now Rohl must continue placing his faith in the Sheffield-born star.
