Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has raved about Cameron Dawson after his display for the Owls against Stoke yesterday.
The goalkeeper hasn’t always been considered the flavour of the month among the Wednesday fan base but he’s firmly established as the number one now.
Dawson pulled off two magnificent saves yesterday as the Owls claimed another victory, this time against Stoke City who were beaten 1-0.
His highlight reel was topped with a wonderful penalty save. It came in the 64th minute and gave the Wednesday goalkeeper a chance to revel in the spotlight a little bit.
Rohl hails Wednesday goalkeeper Dawson
The Owls claimed a big win thanks to the goal scored by Anthony Musaba in stoppage time. However, it was perhaps the work done by Dawson between the posts that slipped quietly under the radar.
Rohl was very impressed with his goalkeeper at the full-time whistle yesterday. He lauded the player for his efforts and suggested that the previous criticism had been unfair.
He told The Star: “In the past, it wasn’t always easy for Cameron. He had some negative voices against him but now he saved the point against Leicester and now he was a player in the key moment today and he was fantastic.”
Dawson established as number one goalkeeper
The 32-year-old was a key figure last season as Wednesday won promotion to the Championship. He was the number one stopper ahead of David Stockdale and this season he’s managed to oust Devis Vasquez.
Dawson’s two crucial saves yesterday was very impressive and they proved the catalyst for Wednesday to claim a win that took them off the foot of the table.
Who Scored shows that Dawson actually made four saves during the contest. Two were more routine than the others though and he deserves immense credit.
Dawson is a popular figure among his Wednesday peers. He’s a classy character in the dressing room and now he’s seeing the rewards that he richly deserves for his efforts.
Some of the stick that the 32-year-old has taken has seemed a little bit over the top in truth. Dawson never shirks his responsibilities and he leads by example every day in training.
Wednesday are fortunate to have two good goalkeepers fighting for the place. Right now, however, it’s Dawson who has the gloves and he doesn’t look like losing them.
