Birmingham City could welcome back a summer signing against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.
As per Birmingham Live, Wayne Rooney previously admitted that he was ‘hoping’ that Lee Buchanan would be available after the international break.
Lee Buchanan previously played under Rooney for Derby County, making 75 appearances for The Rams before attracting interest from the likes of Celtic and Nottingham Forest.
The full-back eventually secured a move to Werder Bremen and was named the Bundesliga’s Rookie of the Month for August, before sealing a swift return to England a year later.
Buchanan has made seven appearances in the Championship for Birmingham City, but has been sidelined with an ankle injury since September.
Rooney previously called Buchanan ‘one of the best left-backs in the country’ during his time at Pride Park, so he is likely to be very excited about the prospect of the 22-year-old facing Sheffield Wednesday.
Speaking after the Blues’ defeat to Sunderland, Rooney said: “I’m hoping that Lee will be available for Sheffield Wednesday. Keshi (Anderson) and Tyler Roberts may be a little bit longer, but gradually we are starting to get players back. Hopefully we have Lee back for Sheffield Wednesday.”
Can Sheffield Wednesday overcome Birmingham City?
Lee Buchanan’s absence meant that Cody Drameh was moved to left-back, but he could now return to his natural position on the right against the Owls.

It is not good news for Sheffield Wednesday that the Midlands club are welcoming players back from injury, though Danny Rohl should benefit from having us own time to work with his players and get a better understanding of what his best line-up actually is.
Rooney is yet to pick up a win since his arrival at St Andrew’s, and Sheffield Wednesday now have a good a chance as any to claim only their second victory of the campaign.
Tough fixtures against the likes of Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers make a big performance against Birmingham this weekend even more important.
