Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan has given his verdict on Danny Rohl.
Sheffield Wednesday‘s fortunes have transformed under Rohl.
The Owls were nailed to the foot of the table after the poor start under Xisco Munoz, but now after a run of four-straight wins, Wednesday are just six points outside the top half.
They remain in 23rd but have managed to drag several other teams into the dogfight with wins against the likes of Birmingham City, Millwall, and Plymouth Argyle in recent weeks.
Only goal difference is keeping Sheffield Wednesday in the drop zone right now.
Barry Bannan hails ‘breath of fresh air’ Danny Rohl
Bannan was on talkSPORT this morning where he discussed a number of Sheffield Wednesday-related things, including the impact that Rohl has made.
Asked what the 34-year-old German coach has changed during his time at Hillsborough, skipper Bannan replied:
“Since the new manager has come in, he’s done brilliantly. We had 13 players under contract at the start of the season, so there’s a lot of change at the club. We’ve had a lot of new players coming in and it takes time for them to settle. Since the manager’s come in, the new signings that we signed in the summer have really found their feet and are starting to put performances in on the pitch that has helped us as a club. The manager has been a breath of fresh air – since he come in, he wants to be on the front foot, pressing high up and I think the fans have seen that and they’ve got behind what he’s trying to do from day one.”
The Danny Rohl effect at Sheffield Wednesday
Since coming in, Rohl has taken what looked like a very League One standard side, and turned them into a force in the Championship.
Only Ipswich Town and Leeds United have taken more points than Sheffield Wednesday in the last five Championship games.
Rohl has rapidly found a way to not only get the best out of players individually, but as a unit too, with the Owls now looking like a team who’ve played together for years.
And like Bannan says, Rohl has managed to get players like Anthony Musaba, Di’Shon Bernard, Djeidi Gassama, and Pol Valentin really firing.
The latter two in particular have come on leaps and bounds in the last few weeks, with Gassama the match-winner against Plymouth.
And Musaba is Sheffield Wednesday’s second highest goal-scorer in the Championship this season; behind Ike Ugbo who many thought was a fairly average signing at first (he’s scored six for the Owls and four for Cardiff City this season).
So Rohl has had a huge impact at the club and the players, and Bannan is arguably another player who’s really stepped up since the German arrived back in October.
Up next for the Owls is a huge home fixture against Yorkshire rivals Leeds United on Friday.
