Akin Famewo received high praise following Sheffield Wednesday’s draw with Leicester City.
According to journalist Alex Miller, the defender ‘went all Maradona’ at Hillsborough last night.
Danny Rohl had suggested that Sheffield Wednesday were capable of causing an upset against Leicester, though it was known that their defence would have to be at their very best to keep out the likes of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jamie Vardy.
While they did let a goal in from Abdul Fatawu inside half an hour, Sheffield Wednesday’s backline did a good job at preventing any further damage for the rest of the game, before Jeff Hendrick eventually equalised.
While the entire team deserve praise, one individual that stood out in defence was Akin Famewo. The 25-year-old made the most touches in the squad (59), won nine duels, four tackles, two interceptions and had a 100% dribble success rate (3/3).
Famewo’s display earned him a rating of 7 from The Star, with Miller writing: ‘Received what looked to be a harsh yellow card on 19 minutes for a tangle with Fatawu. Got forward with excitement, making more dribbles than anyone else and at one stage went all Maradona on us.’
Famewo’s SofaScore rating put him behind only Callum Paterson and Cameron Dawson, while he received the highest rating out of the four defenders.
Should Sheffield Wednesday now stick with Akin Famewo?
Sheffield Wednesday had previously been criticised for playing Akin Famewo out of position, with the defender occupying the left-back spot when he is naturally a centre-half.
Famewo has been replaced in the team when Danny Rohl has opted to play three at the back, but he seems to like him on the left elsewhere.
While Reece James – the actual left-back – remains out of favour, surely fans won’t have any complaints if Famewo can continue playing like he did against Leicester.
Rohl seems to be getting the best out of these players and hopefully there is more to come.
