Sheffield Wednesday earned a huge three points away at Stoke City today.
Sheffield Wednesday went into today’s game at the bet365 Stadium on the back of just their second win of the season, after beating Blackburn Rovers 3-1 at Hillsborough last weekend.
Stoke City meanwhile went into this one without a win in five and having lost their previous three, so for both teams, it was another crunch match.
But the Owls claimed another massive three points thanks to Anthony Musaba’s late goal, extending their unbeaten run to three in the Championship.
Danny Rohl‘s side move off the bottom of the table after Rotherham United lost against Swansea City with Sheffield Wednesday now eight points adrift after Huddersfield Town drew with Bristol City.
Musaba will claim some of the plaudits after coming off the bench and making an impact, but goalkeeper Cameron Dawson deserves a degree of praise too.
Cameron Dawson is ‘one of our own’
Dawson has been a talking point among Sheffield Wednesday fans this season.
He replaced Devis Vasquez earlier in the campaign but has received mixed reviews from fans since, with many calling for Rohl to reinstate the AC Milan loanee.
But Dawson has proved his worth in recent weeks.
He made a huge save in the final minutes against Leicester City to keep the score at 1-1 and he produced a huge penalty save today.
It was a controversial call but Dawson got down low to keep Stoke City out, with the travelling Wednesday fans voicing their love for the academy man afterwards.
As per Sofascore, Dawson made 4 saves and prevented 1.76 goals, also recording 26 accurate passes which is the fourth-most of any Sheffield Wednesday player today.
Sheffield Wednesday’s no.1
It’s not been an easy few years for Dawson.
He’s often faced criticism and it certainly hasn’t been easy for him, having constantly had to battle for the no.1 spot and under different managers.
But, compared to the last time Sheffield Wednesday were in the second tier, it’s clear that Dawson has improved.
We’ve seen evidence of that in the past few games now and after a rocky patch before, Dawson and indeed his teammates should now be filling with confidence.
And Rohl will be proud that he stuck by Dawson despite growing cries to drop him.
Today’s win is another huge one for the Owls who are quickly working their way towards safety in the Championship.
Up next for Rohl’s side is a trip to Norwich City in midweek in another crunch match for Sheffield Wednesday.
