Sheffield Wednesday made it back-to-back home wins after coming from behind to beat QPR 2-1 in the Championship today.
Sheffield Wednesday returned to Hillsborough this afternoon for a relegation six-pointer against fellow strugglers QPR.
Both started the day in the bottom three, where both have been for much of the seasons so far, and both went into this one on the back of some improved form.
QPR had been unbeaten in their previous four after seeing an upturn in form under new boss Marti Cifuentes, whilst the Owls went into this one on the back of a 3-1 defeat at Norwich, but a three-game unbeaten run prior to that.
And today, in what was a dramatic ending, Sheffield Wednesday nicked all the points.
Bambo Diaby’s own goal in the first half had QPR leading for much of the game, but Bailey Cadamarteri scored what looked like an equaliser late on, before Anthony Musaba netted a late, late winner.
Akin Famewo cementing his place in the XI
Famewo only made 17 League One appearances for Sheffield Wednesday last season.
But already this season he’s made 18 Championship appearances, playing in an unfamiliar left-back position and steadily becoming a key player for the Owls.
Danny Rohl has persisted with the 25-year-old at left-back and he gave another sturdy account of himself today, recording 4 tackles and 2 clearances, as per Sofascore – more tackles than any of his teammates and the joint-most clearances.
Famewo also won 13 out of his 16 duels and completed 43 out of 54 passes.
Unlikely heroes stepping up for Sheffield Wednesday
One of the many things that Sheffield Wednesday need in order to beat the drop is everyone stepping up and giving their all.
Famewo maybe went into this season as a bit of a squad player in this side, and like all of his teammates, wasn’t really performing too well at the start.
But he’s kept his head down, worked on his new role in the side, and he’s now one of the first names on the teamsheet.
He never seems in danger of being dropped and today’s performance, if it went under the radar once again, is proof of why he’s becoming so important.
He covers the left side with great command and solidity, putting in the tackles and whatnot, but also moving the ball along nicely.
He gets up and down the flank and gives the Owls a good outlet on the left, but his main job is defending and he does that well.
Today’s win is another huge one for Sheffield Wednesday and although it wasn’t pretty, it’s another step towards safety for them.
