Sheffield Wednesday remain marooned in the relegation zone of the Championship, after a 3-1 defeat away at Norwich City in midweek.
Sheffield Wednesday’s unbeaten run came to an end at Carrow Road on Wednesday night.
Danny Rohl saw his side lose 3-1 away at Norwich in what was a dominant second half display from the Canaries, with Bailey Cadamarteri on the scoresheet for the Owls that night.
There were some positives to take from that performance, but it’s a bleak reminder of the uphill battle that Sheffield Wednesday are facing this season.
The club remains in 23rd place of the Championship table and eight points adrift.
A ‘reality check’ for Sheffield Wednesday, says Rob Staton
Speaking on Football Heaven following the defeat at Norwich, reporter Rob Staton revealed the ‘reality check’ for Sheffield Wednesday.
He said:
“Here’s the reality check, kids. Sheffield Wednesday have had such a poor start; when you don’t win any of your first 10 games, and the new manager has to come in and basically rebuild everything on the pitch, you can’t just have two, three games unbeaten, you need to go on longer runs.
“Sheffield Wednesday, at some point, are going to have to go on a five, six game unbeaten run where the majority of those five, six games are wins. They’ve got to get to Christmas where the gap’s not eight points, it’s more like four, five, six.”
Can Danny Rohl still save this season?
One thing seems certain, and that is that Rohl is a top coach, and if anyone can save this season, it’s him.
Like Staton says though, that defeat at Norwich was maybe a reality check for Sheffield Wednesday and for some who may have got carried away after the wins over Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City.
There was almost an expectation that the Owls would go on and win several more games and easily pull themselves out of the bottom three.
And that may still be the case, but it’s not a quick job or an easy one, and this weekend’s game vs QPR is a real crunch match at the foot of the Championship table.
Both teams have shown improved form in recent weeks but it could be argued that QPR are looking in better shape right now.
They’re playing some sublime football under new boss Marti Cifuentes and are now unbeaten in four, winning three of those to find themselves just one point behind Huddersfield Town in 21st.
A draw might be a good result here and it would be another point on the board for the Owls. But many more points are needed to give Wednesday a fighting chance this season.
