Enzo Maresca has praised Cameron Dawson for what he did against Leicester City yesterday.
Speaking after the draw at Hillsborough, it was the Foxes boss who hailed Sheffield Wednesday’s goalkeeper as ‘great’ for what he pulled off in the dying minutes.
Sheffield Wednesday went into last night’s game with only one win under their belt, while they were yet to claim a draw in their opening first 17 games of the campaign.
Leicester City sat top of the Championship table and had endured three 1-0 defeats and were also yet to be held to only a point.
While it was the Foxes who dominated possession and had looked to claim another victory on the road, Jeff Hendrick’s late equaliser handed the Owls a huge point in their race to avoid relegation.
A close-range header from Jannik Vestegaard looked like it could have snatched all three points right at the death though, however Cameron Dawson‘s exceptional block prevented heartbreak at Hillsborough.
Leicester were left disappointed that they couldn’t take home the win, but Enzo Maresca was quick to praise the Owls ‘keeper.
“It’s disappointing, it’s a shame, but it is what it is… This league is like this,” he said.
“The game is never finished and unfortunately, we conceded at the end. We made some choices that were not the correct ones and after that we controlled the game quite well but then we conceded.
“I think Sheffield Wednesday drew against Leeds away, so you never know. Every time it’s complicated, that’s why I said since we started that it’s never easy… The second goal would probably have killed the game but we missed some chances.
“The ‘keeper made a great save but sometimes when the game is finished in a draw you will go close. It feels like a defeat in the way that we drew.”
Who shone vs Leicester City?
It would have been very unfair if Cameron Dawson hadn’t managed to keep it level at the end, with Sheffield Wednesday performing brilliantly against one of the best teams the Championship has ever seen.
The 28-year-old certainly wasn’t the only one that put a shift in though, with the likes of Callum Paterson also impressing.
The versatile star completed the most key passes (3) and won the most offensive aerials (5). Meanwhile, Will Vaulks made the most successful tackles (5) and the most interceptions (3).
It was a brilliant team performance and one that Danny Rohl will be hopeful to replicate against Blackburn Rovers this weekend.
