One Sheffield Wednesday player has come under yet more praise following the 3-1 win over Hull City in the Championship this evening.
Sheffield Wednesday ended their 2023 on a high note after winning 1-0 away at Preston North End, ending a run of two-straight defeats in the Championship for Danny Rohl‘s side.
At the start of today, the gap to safety was six points. Now it’s just three after Wednesday win and Huddersfield Town and QPR lose.
Today’s game changed after the first half sending off of Hull City’s Tyler Morton, though the Owls still saw through a tough task, with the goals flooding in after the break.
Marvin Johnson opened the scoring, continuing an impressive return to the side for the 33-year-old, with Djeidi Gassama and Josh Windass adding the other goals, and Hull scoring from the spot late on.
And after what was another hardened team performance, Gassama has earned plaudits for his continued development under Rohl.
Djeidi Gassama ‘growing as a player’
Gassama has now started the last two games for Sheffield Wednesday, having previously started just twice under Rohl.
But the former PSG man is earning plaudits for his aggressive and exciting style of play and he caught the eye early on in tonight’s game as well.

As per Sofascore, Gassama completed 6 duels vs Hull City (joint-most with Pol Valentin), with 4 key passes (joint second-most), 2 shots on target (joint-most).
On top of that, Gassama recorded 49 touches of the ball, with 25 accurate passes and a pass completion rate of 78%.
The future of Sheffield Wednesday is coming through
For a long time now, Sheffield Wednesday have been relying, heavily or not, on the same set of core players; the likes of Barry Bannan, Liam Palmer, Josh Windass, Dominic Iorfa, and Callum Paterson to name a few.
And none of them are in their younger years, so the time is right for Rohl and Wednesday to usher in the next generation of Wednesday talents, and that’s exactly what’s happening right now.
Bailey Cadamarteri, Anthony Musaba, and the 20-year-old Gassama are all breaking through and giving fans some newfound, and unusual optimism for the future, with the likes of Joey Phuthi also starting to make an impression on the first-team.
The rebuilding job at Sheffield Wednesday remains a big one but so far, the signs are positive, and if the Owls cam keep Rohl and his impressive backroom team intact, no matter the outcome of this season, then Hillsborough will remain an attractive place for players similar Gassama and co to come and ply their trade.
