Sheffield Wednesday had several debutants, including Svante Ingelsson, impress in the opening game of the season against Plymouth Argyle.

Danny Rohl’s side got off to the perfect start in the 2024/25 Championship season as Sheffield Wednesday stunned Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle with a 4-0 victory at Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday had several players impress, including Jamal Lowe, who was able to score in the first half of his competitive debut for the club.

Josh Windass and Michael Smith also managed to get themselves on the scoresheet in the second stanza that topped off a brilliant afternoon at Hillsborough stadium.

The Owls also had several debutants star in the opening day victory, including the likes of Yan Valery, who played a massive part on the right-flank, causing chaos the entire game.

However, one Sheffield Wednesday debutant in particular impressed for Rohl’s side, and has since been heaped with praise following his performance.

Svante Ingelsson makes ‘tremendous’ Sheffield Wednesday debut

Many Owls players performed to the best of their abilities against Plymouth Argyle, however one player that stood out in the centre-of-the-park was Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Svante Ingelsson, whose performance has been quoted as ‘tremendous’ on his debut.

Joe Crann took to X to write: “This is one of the best Sheffield Wednesday debuts that I’ve seen in a long, long time from Svante Ingelsson. Tremendous.”

The Swedish midfielder managed to provide the assist for Lowe’s first goal in blue & white, and was incredibly impressive alongside Barry Bannan in the centre-midfield position, particularly due to his physical abilities.

Svante Ingelsson could easily tie down centre-midfield position

There is no doubt that Bannan is irreplaceable in Sheffield Wednesday’s lineup, with the captain also making an incredible start to his Championship season.

However, following such an emphatic first game at Hillsborough, Ingelsson could easily freeze new signing Nathaniel Chalobah out of the squad.

On paper, both Ingelsson and Chalobah provide a similar style of play, with the focus being on providing a physical presence in the midfield, whilst giving Bannan the opportunity to play with extra freedom, and this is what the Swede was able to execute perfectly.

Rohl has managed to unearth a diamond in Ingelsson, and although it is incredibly soon in his Sheffield Wednesday career, there will be many that echo Crann’s thoughts following what was such an incredible debut from the midfielder.

This will hopefully be a sign of things to come from the 26-year-old, and he could be crucial in Rohl’s system for the season ahead, as he was against Plymouth Argyle.
