One Sheffield Wednesday player in particular has been praised for his performance against Coventry City.
Sheffield Wednesday ended their run of three defeats on the bounce against Coventry this weekend, taking the Sky Blues to a replay as they played out a 1-1 draw in the FA Cup fourth round.
Just days after they were beaten in the Championship, a late equaliser from Djeidi Gassama meant the Owls will now travel to the Midlands for a second chance at progressing in the competition.
It was a relatively even game at Hillsborough, with the two teams bagging 33 shots between them – though only six of them were on target.
Coventry pushed for the winner towards the end, but Di’Shon Bernard has claimed it was goalkeeper Pierce Charles that ‘saved’ them in his first appearance for the club.
James Beadle was cup-tied and Cameron Dawson had picked up an injury, meaning Pierce Charles was handed his first start in between the sticks for the senior team.
Speaking to Joe Crann of The Star, Bernard said: “He’s a really, really good player. In training he shows it day in day out with his distribution, and I’m really glad he got to show that today because he’s a really good ‘keeper.
“Even at the end, his shot-stopping saved us really. The build-up from our side – he was orchestrating that, so good performance from him.”
Will Pierce Charles stay at Sheffield Wednesday this month?
Pierce Charles had 42 touches during Sheffield Wednesday’s draw with Coventry City.
The teenager made three saves, completed 26 passes and succeed with 10 of his 17 long balls.
Charles’ appearance for the senior team was an unexpected one, with the youngster unlikely to have settled for a place on the bench if Cameron Dawson had been available.
It was reported at the start of the month that The Owls were considering sending Charles out on loan, and his performance this weekend may well tempt in a few more suitors before the deadline.
The 18-year-old proved he is capable of impressing against top opposition and could well earn himself a move to a lower league in the final days of the window.
However, that would surely urge Sheffield Wednesday to bring in a third-choice goalkeeper, as they can’t really rely on just Beadle and Dawson.
Beadle is still only very young himself, while Dawson has struggled with consistency this term. One injury could leave them sweating for a new addition.
