Sheffield Wednesday will be without two key players for their FA Cup clash with Cardiff City.
Sheffield Wednesday head into the FA Cup third round tie off the back of five wins in seven games, though one of their defeats did come against Cardiff just before Christmas.
The Owls have won back-to-back games now though and will be brimming with confidence as they look to seek revenge over the Welsh outfit.
Danny Rohl’s side have been plagued with injuries and suspensions in recent weeks though, with Dominic Iorfa, Akin Famewo, George Byers, Will Vaulks and Callum Paterson all missing from the recent victory over Hull City.
While Sheffield Wednesday are unlikely to be quite as light this weekend, Rohl has confirmed that they will still be without key duo Callum Paterson and Will Vaulks.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the German coach said: “There’s no really new information, but we’ll see tomorrow after training.
“We have to look who is available, and if people are at risk, but we’ll decide tomorrow. Nearly everybody is in training, we have Will – who I said will be out after the last game – but other guys could be available… A lot can happen in 24 hours.
“Callum cannot train – he’s not allowed to have contact in the duels, so he will be out. We’ll look what happens next week with him. With Callum we’ll scan again, it’s important that we don’t take any risks. Head injuries are dangerous and we have to pay attention to that.”
How vital are Paterson & Vaulks to this team?
Sheffield Wednesday’s long list of absentees should really be affecting them more than it has, but the squad have clearly been coping really well with players coming in and out, while others have been forced to play out of position.
The eventual return of Callum Paterson will be huge for Danny Rohl though, with the 29-year-old’s versatility proving vital so far this term. The former Cardiff man has played all over the pitch and would have slotted straight back into the line-up against his old team if he was able to make his comeback.
Will Vaulks’ return will also be very important, with Liam Palmer previously lining up alongside Barry Bannan against Hull. It’s unclear whether Palmer will retain that position, but he definitely showed he is very capable last time out.
Rohl is likely to make a few changes against Cardiff, but will still be eager for his squad to get one back against Erol Bulut’s side.
