Mark Smith has addressed exactly what went wrong for Sheffield Wednesday yesterday.
Speaking on BBC Radio Sheffield, the former Owls defender criticised the team following their 3-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle.
After a narrow defeat to Watford, Danny Rohl took charge of his second game since arriving in Yorkshire.
Sheffield Wednesday needed to close the gap on Plymouth, who sat just above the relegation zone ahead of Wednesday’s clash.
The Owls found themselves behind thanks to an impressive free-kick from the Pilgrims, though the visitors still looked very much in the game.
However, a mistake from Pol Valentin gifted Plymouth their second goal, which Smith claimed ‘killed the game’ at Home Park Stadium.
Smith said: “What went wrong really was the second goal – it just kills you. We were more than in the game and had restricted Plymouth to one shot that hit the outside of the post.
“We had maybe three or four half-chances but in the space of five minutes they concede two minutes which kills the game. It gave us a mountain to climb but it was only 3-0 because we messed about with the ball in the wrong areas of the pitch. I’m all up for passing through the lines but sometimes you need to clear the ball.
“The second half was poor apart from a Josh Windass shot – and even then I think they were already 3-0 down by that point.”

They have got a huge challenge on their hands and Rohl really needs the team to step up if they are going to have a chance at staying in the Championship. Things could go from bad to worse if they are to return to the third tier.
