Bristol City manager Liam Manning has shared his frustrations after a decision went against them during their defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.
Sheffield Wednesday picked up their third win in four games yesterday as they beat Bristol City 2-1 at Hillsborough.
It was another brace from star man Ike Ugbo that claimed all three points for the Owls, sending them to within only three points of safety.
It was the forward’s fifth goal in four games for Danny Rohl’s side and he has proven to be the pivot in a brilliant run of form for a club in danger.
While Sheffield Wednesday were able to cling onto all three points despite a red card for Di’Shon Bernard, Bristol City will feel harshly done by after a penalty shout was ignored late on.
The Robins called for a spot-kick after they believed the ball struck the hand of a Sheffield Wednesday player inside the box, but referee Thomas Kirk waved it away and eventually handed the hosts another victory.
Liam Manning was left questioning the ‘integrity of the competition’ following their defeat on the road.
Speaking to the media (as per Sheffield Star), the Robins boss said: “There was an appeal for a penalty.
“I haven’t seen that back to be fair. I do scratch my head at some of the things that happened, only five minutes of added time? At the start of the season that’s 10 minutes and it impacts the integrity of the competition for me, no added time for goal kicks or throw-ins. I’m scratching my head at some of the decisions I saw today.”
What do Sheffield Wednesday need to do now?
It was hard to tell whether Bristol City should have been given a penalty given the amount of players around the ball and how quick everything moved, so it wasn’t really much of a surprise that it wasn’t given.
But Sheffield Wednesday won’t let that deter them from the fact that they have now claimed a vital nine points this month.
The Owls could now move level on points with QPR if they can beat relegation rivals Rotherham United next weekend, while their poor goal difference could be the only thing keeping them inside the bottom three.
Danny Rohl‘s side need to be targeting maximum points against The Millers and Plymouth Argyle in their next couple of games, because the fixtures that follow against Leeds United and Ipswich Town could be where they slip up.
It’s a vital period of the campaign for the Yorkshire outfit and they can’t afford to limit their good run to only a few games.
