Some Sheffield Wednesday fans were pleasantly surprised with one of their side’s players after Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Stoke City.
George Boyd wasn’t even scheduled to play at the Bet365 Stadium, but was handed a starting berth after Rolando Aarons suffered an injury in the warm-up.
And unlike on many of his recent outings, the 33-year-old cannot be accused of failing to impose himself.
With a little more fortune from the match officials, he might have been the match winner, having seen a well-taken goal ruled out for offside.
This is what those of a Wednesday persuasion are saying about Boyd’s performance…

Even though I am his biggest critic, George Boyd was fantastic today

I thought George Boyd played well. Defended the left side and l thought he was on side for the goal , but haven’t seen it back

Got to disagree on Boyd. Best player in the first half and scored a perfectly good goal.
Missed a physical presence upfront without Fletcher today.

It remains to be seen how Boyd’s display will affect his chances of earning a new contract at Hillsborough, with his current one due to expire in June.
The former Hull City player was brought to Wednesday by Carlos Carvalhal two years ago, but played under the current Owls boss, Steve Bruce, previously.
