Danny Rohl isn’t done in the transfer window and is targeting a move for Everton’s Mason Holgate.
Sheffield Wednesday have had a mixed start to the Championship so far, winning their first game 4-0 before back-to-back defeats against Sunderland and Leeds United.
Plenty of additions have been made by the Owls but a centre-back still appears to be one of the club’s main targets.
The latest reports suggest that Wednesday are now in talks with Premier League side Everton about defender Mason Holgate.

Club career
Holgate began his career at Barnsley, making his debut in 2014 in a 1-1 draw against Yorkshire rivals Doncaster Rovers.
The defender would score his first goal for the club on the final day of the 2014-2015 season against Rochdale and was subsequently named their young player of the year.
His performances caught the eye of several sides and he even had a trial period at Manchester United but eventually signed a five-year deal with Everton in August 2015.
He initially found himself acting as an understudy to Seamus Coleman but really solidified his place in the starting XI following the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti.
Additionally, he was also utilised in a defensive midfield role in the 2019-2020 season. Holgate has lost his place in the Toffees side in recent years and had loan spells at West Bromwich Albion and Southampton.
A loan spell at Southampton was terminated early and he spent the rest of the 2023-2024 campaign on loan at bitter rivals Sheffield United.

International record
Holgate is of Jamaican descent but has featured for England throughout the various youth levels.
However, after failing to break into the senior squad, Holgate was contacted by the Jamaican Football Federation as part of their plans to encourage English footballers with Jamaican heritage to play for their national team.
So far, he is yet to receive a call-up to the Jamaica national team.

Often taking a more direct approach, clearing the ball away, and trying to spread long balls across the pitch, Holgate’s best skill is his versatility.
Not only can Holgate play as a central defender, but he is also more than capable of playing in a right-back role or even as a defensive midfielder.

Holgate had been in talks with French side Lyon over a permanent deal but Everton journalist Paul Joyce confirmed that the move was now off.
Alan Myers of Sky Sports meanwhile revealed that talks had commenced between the Toffees and Wednesday over Holgate however it’s not been revealed if it is a loan or a permanent as Danny Rohl looks to end the transfer window on a high.
