This Sheffield Wednesday January transfer targets has been criticised for his poor performances this season.
Sheffield Wednesday have got their January transfer window up and running with the loan signing of James Beadle from Brighton.
As well as that, the likes of John Buckley and Tyreeq Bakinson have moved on, with others including Devis Vasquez and George Byers now looking like they could be heading for the Hillsborough exit door.
Signings looks like the priority though and one name linked with Danny Rohl‘s side is Isaac Hayden.
The 28-year-old Newcastle United man was linked with a move to Wednesday in the summer but he instead joined Belgian giants Standard Liege.
In 10 Juplier Pro League outings though, Hayden has failed to make his mark and now he’s being linked with a move to Sheffield Wednesday once again.
Isaac Hayden criticised for ‘inconsistent’ performances in Belgium
Standard Liege’s CEO Pierre Locht has spoken out (via Sport Witness) on Hayden and his unsuccessful stint in Belgium, saying:
“It’s likely that he won’t come back, yes. We wanted a player who brought an immediate superior quality to the team. Isaac had a lot of experience in the Premier League. He’s a true number six, capable of settling the game, a stable element. But, in the image of the team, he had some good games but was then too inconsistent.”
Conor Coventry may be the man for Sheffield Wednesday
With Buckley and Bakinson now gone, Rohl now looks set to sign a new central midfielder, with Hayden and Conor Coventry both being linked.
But right now it seems like Coventry is the more closely linked player.
It’s recently been revealed that the Owls are in talks to sign the West Ham man on a permanent deal and being a much younger player than Hayden, and likely on a lesser wage than the Newcastle man, it seems like Coventry is a much better fit as well.
Hayden clearly hasn’t enjoyed his best season this time round and his future looks uncertain. But with other Championship teams apparently keen on the Englishman, he’ll no doubt find himself a new home this month should he inevitably return back from his spell in Belgium.
The Owls are back in league action against Southampton this weekend; the Saints are flying high in 3rd place of the Championship table and beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at Hillsborough on the opening day of this season.
