Sheffield Wednesday endured a chaotic deadline day, bringing in two new faces but missing out on at least one.
Kristian Pedersen and Ian Poveda both joined on loan on deadline day. But Danny Rohl missed out on striker Duncan McGuire who instead joined Blackburn Rovers.
It was one of the most eventful stories of the day; McGuire flew in from USA to complete a move from Orlando City to Blackburn, before Rovers pulled out of the deal.
McGuire then travelled to Sheffield and waited in a hotel as Wednesday worked on a deal, before Blackburn then re-entered discussions and eventually secured a loan deal with an option to buy in the summer.
The 22-year-striker watched on as Blackburn Rovers lost 2-1 at home to QPR last weekend. But the USMNT man may yet be heading back to Orlando.
Paperwork error could cost Duncan McGuire his move to Blackburn Rovers
An emerging report from Lancashire Telegraph has revealed a potentially damning verdict for McGuire.
They report that his move to Ewood Park could yet fall through after a paperwork error from the club, with the move now hanging in the balance despite it technically going through.
The same report adds that it is not known whether a loan fee was paid, but that reports in the US claiming that a $700,000 loan fee (£558,000) was paid is incorrect, and so too are reports of a $7million (£5.58million) option to buy.
Sheffield Wednesday should feel hard done by
Although this is not guaranteed, McGuire’s move to Blackburn falling through would be heartbreaking for him, especially after the way Rovers treated him on deadline day.
And it would also be a blow to Sheffield Wednesday who clearly wanted to sign him, and looked ready to do so before Rovers came back in.
What’s more is that the loan window has now passed and so, even if McGuire’s loan move to Blackburn were to fall through, he would not be able to join Sheffield Wednesday.
So it’s a potentially huge blow for everyone involved and Blackburn will be kicking themselves if the deal falls through because of a paperwork error.
Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side haven’t been in great form recently; they lost to QPR last time out and have won just one of their last 11 in the league, currently sitting in 18th and just five points above QPR in 22nd.
There’s more and more teams joining the relegation fight now and that could play into Wednesday’s hands, though Rohl’s side need to find some wins of their own.
