Sheffield Wednesday are considering a move for a 15-goal MLS star this month.
Sheffield Wednesday are eager to make more signings in the January transfer window, after bringing both Ike Ugbo and James Beadle in on loan.
The Owls remain interested in bolstering their attack though, despite Ugbo’s arrival. Danny Rohl’s side have scored the fewest goals in the Championship this season (21).
While the club have been linked with a big money striker signing, it is now thought that they are looking to bring in a new attacking midfielder too.
According to Joe Crann of The Star, Sheffield Wednesday are considering a January move for Philadelphia Union’s Daniel Gazdag.
With the Major League Soccer season ending in 2023, the Hungarian is reportedly considering is future. Sheffield Wednesday have been informed of his availability this month and could potentially strike a loan deal, however they are unlikely to be the only club that have been made aware of his possible exit.
Who is Daniel Gazdag?
Daniel Gazdag made his senior debut for Budapest Honved in 2013 and went onto bag 31 goals and 32 assists in 212 appearances as they won the Hungarian top division and the Hungarian Cup.
The ‘outstanding’ midfielder went onto complete a £1.4 million move to Philadelphia Union in 2021, though managed only five goals in his first season in the MLS.
However, he has since taken his ability in front of goal to another level, netting 40 goals and providing 26 assists in only 89 games since moving Stateside.
Gazdag’s second season in Philadelphia saw him named in the MLS Best XI, while also finishing runner-up in the MLS Cup. He then ended last season as the joint-seventh top goalscorer in MLS (14), matching former Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke’s tally.
Gazdag also finished the season with the second-most shots in the squad (71) and the second-most key passes (54).
The 27-year-old also features heavily for the Hungary national team, having made his international debut in September 2019.
Gazdag has earned 23 caps for his country since, and also netted Hungary’s fourth goal in their shock 4-0 win over England in June 2022.
The Hungarian also netted three goals in seven games in the World Cup qualifiers, and has five international goals to his name.
With his contract not set to expire until December 2025, transfermarkt claim his current market value is £6.9m, so a permanent move certainly wouldn’t be on the table.
