The Owls ended their two-year hiatus from the second-tier in May 2023 as Darren Moore guided the club to glory in the League One play-offs. Yet despite sealing Sheffield Wednesday their place in the 2023/24 Championship campaign, the club parted company with the coach just 21 days after winning at Wembley.
Moore’s successor, Xisco Munoz, must now move to improve Sheffield Wednesday’s first-team squad with a host of confirmed signings. Reece James – Sheffield Wednesday confirmed the 29-year-old as their first signing of the summer from Blackpool on June 30. The left-back returned to Hillsborough after spending the 2022/23 season on loan with the Owls for an undisclosed fee. He offered four goals and an assist through 34 games while on loan.
Juan Delgado – Portuguese side Pacos de Ferreira agreed to sell the 30-year-old to Sheffield Wednesday on July 24. The Chilean right-back moved to Hillsborough on a two-year contract to reunite with manager Xisco. He played under the Owls coach for Gimnastic de Tarragona back in 2016 after moving to Europe.

Ashley Fletcher – Sheffield Wednesday confirmed the signing of the 27-year-old on loan from Watford for the 2022/23 season on July 25. The temporary transfer reunited the striker with Xisco, having joined the Hornets under the Owls boss in 2021. He offered two goals under Xisco but only made two appearances.
Pol Valentin – Sporting Gijon sold the 26-year-old to Sheffield Wednesday for an undisclosed fee on July 27. The right-back moved to Hillsborough on a two-year contract having spent his entire career so far in his native Spain. He featured 24 times and offered two assists during his only season at the Rojiblancos.
Di’Shon Bernard – Sheffield Wednesday confirmed the signing of the 22-year-old as a free agent on July 31. The Jamaica defender was unattached after leaving Manchester United at the end of his contract in June. He also spent the second half of the 22/23 term on loan at Portsmouth for 10 League One games.
Bambo Diaby – Preston North End sold the 25-year-old to Sheffield Wednesday for an undisclosed fee on August 2. The Spanish centre-half moved to Hillsborough after 18 months with the Lilywhites. He played in 25 matches with Preston, including turning out 17 times during the 2022/23 Championship campaign.
Anthony Musaba – Sheffield Wednesday confirmed the signing of the 22-year-old from AS Monaco on August 3. The Dutch winger joined the Owls for free but with Les Monegasques retaining a 20% sell-on clause. Musaba spent time at Ligue 2 side FC Metz and Eredivisie outfit NEC Nijmegen during 2022/23.
Devis Vasquez – AC Milan agreed to loan the 25-year-old to Sheffield Wednesday for the 2023/24 season on August 5. The Colombian goalkeeper had moved to San Siro from Club Guarani this January but failed to make a single appearance. He sealed a move to Serie A after four clean sheets in 31 games at Guarani.
Momo Diaby – Sheffield Wednesday confirmed the signing of the 26-year-old on loan from Portuguese outfit Portimonense SC on August 11. The 6 ft 2 defensive midfielder joined the Owls on a season-long deal. The Frenchman has spent his career in Portugal, including 28 games for Portimonense in 2022/23.
Djeidi Gassama – Paris Saint-Germain agreed to let their 19-year-old academy graduate move to Sheffield Wednesday on August 15. The Owls did not pay an upfront sum for the left winger but they will owe €1m (£850k) via performance bonuses. PSG also kept a 20% sell-on clause after a loan spell at KAS Eupen.

Dennis Adeniran – Sheffield Wednesday announced their released and retained list for the 2023/24 term on June 2 with the midfielder one confirmed to be leaving Hillsborough at the end of his contract on June 30. The 24-year-old spent two years at the Owls, playing in 51 matches for seven goals and three assists.
Jaden Brown – Sheffield Wednesday announced that the left-back was leaving Hillsborough at the end of his contract on June 2. The 24-year-old spent two seasons with the Owls after signing from Huddersfield Town in July 2021. He only had 32 appearances for the South Yorkshire club for one goal and four assists.
Sam Durrant – The Owls confirmed on June 2 that the 21-year-old was leaving Sheffield Wednesday at the end of his contract. The midfielder only joined the Hillsborough outfit in July 2022 after leaving Blackburn Rovers’ Under-21s. But he made just one first-team appearance lasting five minutes against Derby County.
Ryan Galvin – The Owls affirmed on June 2 that the 22-year-old was leaving Sheffield Wednesday at the end of his contract. The left-back had spent the 2022/23 season away from the club on loan to Maidstone United. He also had a spell with Gloucester City in 2021 but only made four senior outings with the Owls.
Ben Heneghan – Sheffield Wednesday confirmed on June 2 that the Owls had released the defender after just one season. Moore had signed the 29-year-old in July 2022 from AFC Wimbledon. But he only fielded the centre-back in 13 fixtures before Heneghan underwent surgery on a knee injury sustained in October.
Jack Hunt – Sheffield Wednesday confirmed on June 2 that the right-back was leaving Hillsborough at the end of his contract. The 32-year-old had re-joined the Owls in July 2021 from Bristol City three years after leaving. He made a combined 180 appearances for the Owls and joined Bristol Rovers on August 18.
David Stockdale – York City confirmed the signing of the goalkeeper in a free transfer on June 4 following his release from Sheffield Wednesday. The deal marked a return to the LNER Community Stadium side for the 37-year-old. Stockdale started his career at the Minstermen after graduating from the club’s academy.

Aden Flint – Sheffield Wednesday also confirmed in their released and retained list for the 2023/24 term on June 2 that the 33-year-old was returning to Stoke City following the expiration of his loan transfer. He returned to Hillsborough in January following a previous loan spell from Cardiff City to play in 21 fixtures.

Jay Buchan – Sheffield Wednesday confirmed that the 18-year-old had signed a professional contract with the Owls on July 11 following his release by Leeds United. The Whites let the midfielder leave Elland Road at the end of his scholarship in June. He had offered four goals in 40 appearances at the Under-18s level.
Ryan Wilson – Sheffield Wednesday confirmed that the 18-year-old had signed a professional contract at Hillsborough on July 11. The defender joined the Owls permanently after a trial spell during 2022/23 from Blackburn Rovers. He spent 12 years at Ewood Park, while the centre-half is eligible for England or Wales.
Along with Buchan and Wilson signing for Sheffield Wednesday’s Under-23 team, the Owls also confirmed 11 new signings for their Under-18 academy team on August 1. The Hillsborough outfit gave the following players two-year scholarship contracts to join the club as first-year apprentices from the 2023/24 season:
