Ciaran Brennan may have played his last game for Sheffield Wednesday.
That’s according to The Yorkshire Post, who have reported that the Owls are said to be open to the idea of the defender leaving permanently next month.
Ciaran Brennan joined Sheffield Wednesday in 2013 and progressed up through the youth ranks before making his first team debut in September 2020.
The 23-year-old has racked up 18 appearances for his boyhood club and previously received praise from former manager Xisco Munoz, alongside the other young players, for being ‘dangerous’. However, the Spaniard didn’t include Brennan in their 25-man squad list and so he has been unable to feature in the Championship.
After failing to play for Sheffield Wednesday since March 2022, Brennan has now been sent out on loan for the fourth time to Hartlepool United.
The former Republic of Ireland youth international has only just joined the National League club, but could already be preparing for a permanent move away from Hillsborough when his loan spell ends in January.
With the Owls signing both Bambo Diaby and Di’Shon Bernard in the summer, Brennan has found himself even further down the pecking order.
With his contract set to expire next summer, Danny Rohl‘s side could now look to cash in and make some profit on their academy product.
Who could leave Sheffield Wednesday in January?
It’s a shame for Brennan after he picked up an injury that left him unable to catch the eye in pre-season.
But he hasn’t really done enough to prove himself worthy of a new deal, while Sheffield Wednesday will definitely want to avoid losing him for a free in six months time.
With his 24th birthday approaching in May, it is probably about time to bring his ten-year stint to an end.
Brennan won’t be the only one who could potentially leave though, with a whopping 15 players set to see their contracts expire next summer.
Stars including George Byers, Josh Windass and Barry Bannan are likely to see their time at Hillsborough extended. But other names that include Ashley Fletcher, Lee Gregory and Tyreeq Bakinson could attract interest in January if available on a cheaper deal.
