Sheffield Wednesday tried and failed to sign Leeds United youngster Darko Gyabi on loan in January, reports The Athletic.
Gyabi, 19, was on the books at Millwall as a youngster, before joining up with the Manchester City academy in 2018. He spent four years with the club but never made a first-team appearance, leaving for Leeds United in a £5million deal in 2022.
The central midfielder was part of the deal that saw England midfielder Kalvin Phillips head the other way, but Gyabi hasn’t filled the boost of Phillips, making just one Premier League appearance for the Whites and three in all competitions.
And it turnes out that Gyabi almost left Leeds United on loan in the January transfer window at the start of this year, with Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom making the most effort to bring him in for the second half of the 2022/23 campaign which ended in promotion for the Owls.
The Athletic adds that Leeds decided to keep him at the club at the last minute, with the player’s chances of first-team exposure much greater following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.
What next for Gyabi?
As per The Athletic, Gyabi could now have a route into the Leeds first-team after the club’s relegation, and he could yet be lining up against Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship next season.
The England U20 man certainly looks like a prospect and he’s the type of player that Wednesday should be looking at again this summer.
Xisco Munoz looks set to be limited to free and loan signings and he needs to get to work fast, with the start of the new season just a few weeks away now.
