Another of the six senior players released by Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season has found a new club.

So far, only Daniel Pudil (Mlada Boleslav) and George Boyd (Peterborough United) are back playing professional football after their Hillsborough deals expired.

Gary Hooper was rumoured to be joining the Iranian side, Esteghlal, this week, but little has been heard of David Jones (who was training with his former club, Burnley, to maintain his fitness), Almen Abdi (who according to his Instagram page is still travelling through south-east Asia with his partner) or Marco Matias since their departures in May.

Earlier this week, though, the struggling Portuguese side, OS Belenenses SAD, announced that they had signed Matias, along with another winger with prior experience in English football, Silvestre Varela (formerly of West Bromwich Albion).

Incidentally, Matias was in Sporting’s youth ranks while Varela was playing for the Portuguese giants’ first team.

The former Sheffield Wednesday man spent four full seasons at Hillsborough, although much of his Owls career was spent sidelined through injury.

His last Portuguese top-flight campaign, with Nacional, yielded 17 goals – prompting his £2.8 million transfer to Wednesday (Transfermarkt).
