A Sheffield Wednesday fan favourite has been linked with a surprise move to South America this month.
Josh Windass joined Sheffield Wednesday from Wigan Athletic back in 2020 and has since been one of their most important players.
The ‘fantastic’ attacker has netted 35 goals and provided 17 assists in 125 appearances for The Owls, which included 19 goal contributions as they won promotion from League One last season.
Windass’ most memorable moment was definitely his last minute goal in the League One play-off final to win Wednesday their place back in the Championship – shortly after he had already been named in the Team of the Season.
Windass is one of a large number of players whose contract will expire in the summer though, and there has been very little talk of offering him a new contract.
With the January transfer window opening last week, players are now able to speak to foreign clubs in regards to a pre-contract agreement.
One club that could now take advantage of Windass’ situation is Argentine outfit Club Atletico Talleres.
According to Sky Sports, the Primera Division side are interested in signing Windass on a pre-contract deal that would see him make the move to South America at the end of the season.
A move to Argentina would make Windass the first-ever English player to play in their top division.
Club Atletico Talleres finished the 2023 season in second place and are due to kick off the 2024 campaign at the end of January.
Given that their season finishes in the summer, it would be an interesting move for Windass if he had to wait another six months for the 2025 term to start again.
Should Sheffield Wednesday keep Josh Windass?
Josh Windass has been in and out the team with injuries this season, claiming two goals and two assists in 13 starts in the Championship.
The 29-year-old is clearly still a very important player and has plenty to give to Danny Rohl, while his versatility also comes in handy.
Windass has been played on the wing, in an attacking midfield role and also up front during his spell at Hillsborough.
If Windass wants a new contract then I think Sheffield Wednesday should give him an extra year – especially if they are to face relegation.
It would also be very surprising if he did like the thought of moving to Argentina and would surely prefer to stay in England with his family and friends. I can’t imagine it’s like moving to the Saudi Pro League where you are gifted bags of money.
