Sheffield Wednesday boss Xisco Munoz has failed to ruled out the possibility of reuniting with former Watford striker Troy Deeney at Hillsborough this summer.
Deeney, 35 is a free agent after being released by Birmingham City at the end of last season. Following Munoz’s appointment at Sheffield Wednesday, Deeney was quick to congratulate the Spaniard on Twitter and that prompted speculation that the pair could reunite this summer.
And as per BBC Radio Sheffield’s Rob Staton, Deeney has claimed that he’s about to sign a deal with an unnamed club in the next week, and when asked whether or not Deeney is a player of interest, Munoz said:
“We need thinking about what is the positive things. The most important thing what I need to know also exactly is what we had and I told you our first day that I want try to give different things to what the team had. This is one of the things that’s important for me, and we will see what happens in the transfer market with Troy or with someone.”
And despite his release from Birmingham City this summer, Blues boss John Eustace often spoke fondly of Deeney.
Back in January, Eustace said of Deeney:
“On and off the pitch he has been fantastic. He has been a true leader, a great role model for the younger players, the work he does for the community is great, he has got the club at heart. I think he has been very, very good.
“I am sure he has got another two-three seasons in him, obviously it depends on Troy, how he feels and what he wants to do but his contribution this season has been second to none. I think he has still got a point to prove, he is still hungry, you can see that by his performances and we are lucky to have him.”
Munoz and Deeney to reunite at Sheffield Wednesday?
Sheffield Wednesday look set to utilise the free and loan markets this summer, and Deeney is one of the most experienced players on the free agent market.
His age might be a turn-off to some fans, but Deeney’s last season was one of his best in a few years – he scored seven goals in 33 Championship outings, adding to the 95 goals he’s scored in the second tier in his career.
And for Munoz, someone like Deeney would not only be a leader within the dressing room, but he could also help to integrate his style of play at Hillsborough as it’s something that Deeney will be familiar with.
Expect to see some more links like this over the next few weeks as Wednesday quite frantically try to ready themselves for the start of the 2023/24 season.
