Belgian outfit Standard Liege are making a late bid to sign Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden, reports The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath.

Hayden, 28, looked set to be heading to Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day.

Reports had revealed that the Newcastle United midfielder was undergoing a medical with the Owls but McGrath has since revealed that Liege are making a late bid to sign the Englishman.

He tweeted earlier this afternoon:

Sheffield Wednesday look to be in dire need of new recruits as we enter the final hours of this summer’s transfer window, with the Owls having lost all four of their opening Championship games of the season.

Names like Hayden, his Newcastle teammate Jeff Hendrick, and John Buckley have been linked so far, but nobody is yet to sign for Xisco Munoz’s side on deadline day.

Wednesday set for transfer disappointment?

Hayden looked all but confirmed as a new Sheffield Wednesday player.

And he’d be a great signing still, but now the Owls are facing competition from Liege and beating a top flight European side the the signing could now prove difficult.

Hayden will surely be eager to play at the highest level possible and Liege may yet be a much more attractive proposition than Wednesday, who’ve really struggled so far this season.

The window remains open and Hayden remains available, but this move could yet slip through Wednesday’s fingers.
