Sheffield Wednesday midfielder George Byers has become the centre of transfer speculation as we approach tonight’s 11pm deadline.

Sheffield Wednesday look poised to strike some late transfer deals today. But the Owls also look likely to offload one or two players as well, with Byers looking like a strong candidate to leave Hillsborough.

The 27-year-old hasn’t featured in any of the last five games now, and after some back and forth regarding his future in S6, it now seems clear that the Owls want to offload him.

George Byers ‘likely’ to leave Sheffield Wednesday, says Joe Crann

Journalist Joe Crann has now revealed that Byers is ‘looking likely’ to leave Sheffield Wednesday today.

He says that Blackpool are hoping to get a loan deal over the line but Sheffield Wednesday’s South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley are hoping for a permanent deal.

Crann though says that a move to Blackpool is looking the more likely.

Danny Rohl must surely have a midfielder coming in

The midfield department at Wednesday was overly-stocked at the start of the window.

But after offloading Tyreeq Bakinson, John Buckley, and now potentially Byers, that position seems to be missing a player, and so Danny Rohl will surely be hoping that a new name comes in today.

Sheffield Wednesday need a holding midfielder and that’s been well-documented this month; Byers can play that role, but with his contract out in the summer it seems like the club are keen to clear the books a bit.

But the Owls need to careful to not leave Rohl short-handed for the remainder of the season, with a new midfielder and a striker still looking like key priorities for today.

The transfer window slams shut at 11pm tonight.
