Recent reports have revealed that Sheffield Wednesday have taken non-league defender Dan Ellison on trial.
Sheffield Wednesday’s first-team have struggled this season. But their U21s side have had an impressive start to the season, and they look like they could make another impressive addition in the coming weeks.
The Star recently revealed that Ellison, 18, was handed a trial with the 21s.
The centre-back currently plays for National League South side Chippenham Town but started for the Owls’ U21s side against Hull City earlier in the week.
And speaking to Sheffield Wednesday News, journalist and Chippenham Town commentator Jamie Oleszynski gave an insight into what Sheffield Wednesday could expect from Ellison should he sign.
Oleszynski said:
“Despite only being 18, Ellison shows the experience of a seasoned defender. He was thrown into the fire in the National League South this season after just one-third of a season in Step 4. He hasn’t looked out of place one bit and has been our top performer at the back, even popping up with three goals.
“And although he’s not the tallest of players, he still wins a lot of aerial duels and jumps for absolutely everything. He’s an all-rounder; when the ball is on the floor he can play out with it, and he’s shown this season that he’s adept at playing long diagonal balls, too.”
Who is Dan Ellison?
Ellison is a centre-back who’s made his name with non-league Chippenham Town, who currently play in the sixth-tier of English football.
Despite being only 18, Ellison has been a key player for Chippenham so far this season, with the club currently sitting in 14th place of the table, and managed by Gary Horgan.
Ellison was on the scoresheet for Chippenham in their last outing; a 2-1 defeat at home to promotion contenders Hampton & Richmond.
Could Ellison be a future Sheffield Wednesday star?
Ellison is obviously someone who’s turning heads in the non-league given his recent trial at Sheffield Wednesday, and given Oleszynski’s high praise for the youngster, it appears that he’s already playing at a level above the sixth tier.
The Owls coaches would’ve got a good look at Ellison this week. We’re yet to hear much about how the trial went, but the Owls won 5-2 in the end, and if Ellison performed well then he could be in line for another trial.
He sounds like a very modern centre-back in that he’s a ball-playing centre-back, which would suit the style of play that Danny Rohl wants to don going forward, and the fact that he’s good in the air is always helpful in the Football League, and scoring goals is a welcome bonus.
Expect to hear some more about Ellison at Sheffield Wednesday in the coming weeks.
