Sheffield Wednesday are set to bring in an eighth signing for this week’s training camp at St George’s Park.

It has been almost a week since the Owls confirmed their last arrival and it has since gone rather quiet to their standards.

However, recent days had speculated that they were closing in on a new striker and it now looks like a deal is ‘done and dusted’.

Sheffield Wednesday have previously been linked with former loanee Ike Ugbo and their January target Mika Biereth, but now look set to wrap up a deal from a former Premier League youngster.

Sheffield Wednesday set to confirm eighth signing

The Guardian journalist Will Unwin wrote on X: “Sheffield Wednesday deal for former Manchester United striker Charlie McNeill is all done and dusted. Confirmation to come today.”

The ‘unstoppable’ 20-year-old was released by Manchester United last month, having failed to replicate his youth form into senior football.

McNeill had racked up 60 goal contributions in 82 matches for their U18s and U21s, but managed only three goals whilst out on loan with Newport County and Stevenage before leaving Old Trafford.

The forward was eager to find new opportunities elsewhere as he looked to make a breakthrough into senior football and Danny Rohl appears eager to try and get the best out of him.

What does this mean for Bailey Cadamarteri?

Wednesday already helped Bailey Cadamarteri find his feet in the Championship last term and will now be confident of doing the same thing as McNeill.

However, the two youngsters will have to compete with each other for game-time at Hillsborough, as it is still unlikely either of them will be first-choice.

The Owls are pushing for a top half finish next season and starting an inexperienced striker like themselves won’t take them to the level they need to be at.

Rohl will surely still be looking to sign someone like Ugbo to complete his attack and act as a mentor to the two young ones.

McNeill still looks to be a promising addition though, while it will be interesting to see exactly what it means for Cadamarteri.

It also suggests that Jamal Lowe will occupy more of a wide role at Wednesday, having spent a large chunk of last season at Swansea City as a striker.
