The January transfer window is just around the corner, and for Sheffield Wednesday, it promises to be a huge month.
Sheffield Wednesday need new signings. But whether or not owner Dejphon Chansiri can facilitate a few, if any transfer moves, remains to be seen.
The Owls are in dire need right now with Danny Rohl’s side sitting in last place of the Championship table and already nine points adrift after a terrible season so far.
There’s still hope, however. Rohl is a well-regarded coach with a strong-looking backroom team behind him, and a few new players in January could give his side enough to beat the drop.
Here we look at three summer transfer targets that the Owls could realistically return for in January…
Josh Onomah
Sheffield Wednesday have enough bodies in the middle right now. But with the futures of loan pair Jeff Hendrick and John Buckley uncertain, and injuries bound to crop up in the second half of the season, a new central midfielder could be needed in January.
Josh Onomah remains a free agent after coming close to signing for Stoke City in the summer, at the same time as links to Sheffield Wednesday emerged.
He’s a very physical, yet technically-gifted midfielder who could add some much-needed attacking prowess to the Owls’ middle section.
Liam Moore
Former Reading centre-back is another player linked with a move to Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, but who remains a free agent.
The 30-year-old made well over 200 total appearances for Reading, captaining the club in many, with 284 Championship outings to his name having also represented the likes of Leicester City among others.
There’s few players with more experience than him and with certain names in the Wednesday defence having failed to impress this season, a centre-back addition looks like a necessity in January.
Moore would no doubt need time to get up to speed, but he could be a shrewd addition for the second half of the campaign.
Bailey Peacock-Farrell
The former Sheffield Wednesday loan man was tipped to return to Hillsborough for this season, but he instead opted for a loan move to Danish side Aarhus.
But after a couple of errors, the Northern Ireland international is now having to share the no.1 spot, with the 27-year-old in and out of the XI most every game.
He was a well-liked name during his time at Sheffield Wednesday and if Burnley feel like he’s not playing or progressing as much as he should be, and that he could benefit from a move elsewhere, Wednesday may well be interested.
Rohl’s current options are Cameron Dawson and Devis Vasquez though neither have covered themselves in much glory this season.
Clarets boss Vincent Kompany is a fan of Peacock-Farrell, having previously labelled him as a ‘top’ player.
