Sheffield Wednesday are said to have identified Danny Rohl as their no.1 managerial target, with the Owls looking set to appoint the 34-year-old.
Sheffield Wednesday have been without a manager for a week now.
Dejphon Chansiri axed Xisco Munoz last week and reports say that Rohl looks set to become the next Owls manager, though a deal is yet to be finalised.
It’ll be a real baptism of fire for Rohl; his only experiences have come as an assistant with the likes of Southampton, RB Leipzig, and the German national side, so coming into a Wednesday club in turmoil and rooted to the foot of the Championship table will be an experience to say the least.
Rohl seems like a good appointment in the long run. But whether or not this season would take its toll on the young coach, and whether Chansiri would even give Rohl time beyond this season, remains to be seen.
In the position Wednesday are in, a shorter-term appointment of a more tried and tested manager might be best; a sort-term appointment of someone like Neil Warnock.
He’s not the glamorous, contemporary appointment that Rohl would be. But there’s little arguing that Warnock would stand a better chance of keeping Wednesday in the Championship.
He did exactly that with Huddersfield last season and they looked just as bad as Wednesday do now.
And he’s done it with a number of teams before too, with reporter Rob Staton revealing earlier in the month that the now out-of-work Warnock would be open to possibility taking charge of Wednesday, despite his Sheffield United roots.
Relegation needs to be avoided at all costs. Should Wednesday sink back into League One then it could be much more difficult to break out of it again, with this current side seemingly not as well off as it was when the Owls were previously relegated.
It would take another huge rebuilding job and so staying in the Championship at all costs should be the aim, and Warnock is the certainly the man for that kind of job.
