Sheffield Wednesday are without a manager. But with more than a week til the Owls are back in action, the club has time to find a new boss.
Sheffield Wednesday parted ways with Xisco Munoz last week.
Since, a number of names have been linked with the job, with a front-runner have quickly emerged in Danny Rohl.
It’s been said that Wednesday are set to appoint the 34-year-old German coach who was most recently an assistant coach with the German national side.
But Rohl, or whoever comes in, has a huge task ahead of the; Sheffield Wednesday are rooted to the foot of the table and without a win, with most in the side having under-performed so far this season.
And one player who’s certainly under-performed is last seaosn’s play-off hero Josh Windass.
Sheffield Wednesday needing more from Windass
Windass managed to score nine goals during Wednesday’s 2020/21 relegation campaign and so he’s proven himself in this league before.
And last time round he scored 12 in League One, assisting seven more, so he’s shown more recently that he remains a player with ability.
So far this season though, Windass has failed to score in seven Championship outings, with his performances having come under criticism from Owls fans.
Windass offers something a bit different to the likes of Michael Smith, Lee Gregory, and Ashley Fletcher, in that he’s more of a pacier striker who could get in behind opposition defences.
Munoz played him in a number of roles but mostly behind the no.9 or out wide. The next Wednesday boss though could get more out of Windass by playing him further up, perhaps alongside a Smith or a Gregory, with the pace of Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama maybe giving Windass more leeway and chances.
It’s certainly a tough task for the next Owls boss. But the players need to step up too, with Windass one of the names who needs to show his class to get Wednesday out of this mess.
