Sheffield Wednesday look set to have a bit of rebuilding to do in the summer, with a new goalkeeper looking like a priority.
Sheffield Wednesday see a number of players reach the ends of their contracts in the summer, and with several players now on loan, it could leave Danny Rohl with a big rebuilding job in the summer.
And it looks like a new goalkeeper will become a key priority for the Owls next summer with Cameron Dawson currently out of contract and James Beadle on loan.
Youngster Pierce Charles looks set to play as no.2 next time round as he gains experience, but he’ll need a no.1 to follow and learn from next time round.
With that in mind, here are three goalkeepers who Sheffield Wednesday could sign for free this summer…
Luke Southwood
26-year-old shot-stopper Luke Southwood sees his Cheltenham Town contract come to an end this summer.
The one-time Northern Ireland international has enjoyed a strong season despite his side’s struggles in League One, with 92 saves in 30 League One appearances so far this season, 7 clean sheets, and 2/5 penalties saved (Sofascore).
What’s more is that Southwood is a very good player with his feet; he averages 50.4 touches per game this season and 17.5 accurate passes, whilst Beadle averaged 40.2 touches per game on loan at Oxford United in the first half of the season, but averaged 17.9 passes per game.
Alex McCarthy
Experienced goalkeeper Alex McCarthy sees his Southampton contract expire in the summer.
Rohl worked with the 34-year-old during his time coaching at St Mary’s and could persuade the former Premier League man, who has 147 top flight appearances under his belt, to Hillsborough this summer.
His experience and overall shot-stopping ability would be a huge addition for Sheffield Wednesday, and working with Rohl and playing regular football once again could be a decisive factor for the Englishman.
Karl Hein
Arsenal look set to release 27-cap Estonian international Karl Hein this summer, after five years at the club and just one first-team appearance.
The 21-year-old has failed to make his breakthrough at the club and was unfortunate last season to see a loan spell with Reading in the Championship cut short due to injury.
But Arsenal clearly signed him because he’s a player with potential still, and with 27 caps on the international stage at just 21, Hein may be a diamond in the rough.
Sheffield Wednesday return to Championship action with a trip to Millwall on Saturday, with kick off at 3pm.
