Sheffield Wednesday stalwart may have just played his back way into Danny Rohl’s starting XI vs Millwall

Sheffield Wednesday’s win over Grimsby Town gave Danny Rohl a lot to think about.

The Owls head coach used their first round clash with Hull City to give a chance to his fringe players, with the likes of Charlie McNeill and Marvin Johnson impressing.

While he didn’t make quite as many changes this time round, he did enough for certain players to make their mark and also earn themselves a comfortable victory.

With Sheffield Wednesday enduring back-to-back defeats in the Championship, Rohl could look to make minor tweaks as they travel to Millwall this weekend.

Liam Palmer thrown a lifeline v Grimsby Town

One player who may well have forced his way into Rohl’s plans is Liam Palmer, who is yet to make a start on the second division this term.

While Palmer racked up 25 starts last season, the additions of players such as Yan Valery and Svante Ingelsson has meant he has had to settle for a place on the bench.

However, the veteran’s versatility was one again on show against Grimsby and may well be the deal breaker that earns him a place back in the team.

Palmer started the match at right-back, but Sean Fusire’s half-time substitution saw him moved into the No.6 role – a position he had occupied for a large chunk of last season.

It certainly didn’t phase him either, with The Star admitting his versatility had come in very ‘handy’ for Rohl.

The utility-man made a whopping 98 touches against the Mariners and enjoyed 92% passing accuracy, while he also completed two dribbles, made three clearances and made one tackle.

Palmer could fill in in two different positions v Millwall

While it seems unlikely that Palmer will be able to worm his way in at right-back with Valery and Pol Valentin available, centre-back and defensive midfield could definitely be a possibility.

Wednesday’s backline has struggled in recent weeks and Dominic Iorfa could potentially face the chopping block.

With the club yet to bring in a new centre-back, Rohl could favour Palmer in the heart of defence.

Similarly, there could well be a spot available in the middle of the park due to their lack of defensive options.

Rohl does have Shea Charles and Nathaniel Chalobah to choose from, but it is unclear whether either player will be fit and ready to start against Millwall.

Palmer certainly hasn’t done his reputation any damage and, despite the flurry of transfer arrivals, could well be back in Rohl’s plans this weekend.
