Sheffield Wednesday had a fairly impressive end to the transfer window. But they’re lack of striker signings this summer is cause for concern.

Loan deals for John Buckley and Jeff Hendrick gave a nice finishing touch to what was a testing summer for Sheffield Wednesday.

There were 12 new arrivals in the end and for Xisco Munoz, the task now is to get this group of players playing as a team, and get Sheffield Wednesday out of the drop zone.

They got their first point of the season away at Leeds United last time out in what was a good performance. But the Owls lacked any real attacking threat in that game and with the just the one striker signing in the summer – the loan signing of Ashley Fletcher – it looks like Munoz is lacking in the final third.

The Spaniard hasn’t ruled out the possibility of signing free agents and one potentially huge signing for the Owls could be Andre Gray.

The 32-year-old is available after seeing his contract with Greek side Aris terminated. Gray has 438 career appearances to his name with 153 goals and 58 assists, with the bulk of those coming in the Football League across spells with Luton Town, Brentford, and Burnley.

But it was with Burnley where Gray really made his name, scoring 33 in 78, with 25 of those coming in the 2015/16 Championship campaign in which Gray won that year’s Golden Boot.

That was obviously a long time ago. But Gray was a leading scorer for Aris with 13 goals last season, and 10 in 28 during a loan spell with QPR in the season before.

There’s few strikers on the free agent market with as much experience and pedigree as Gray, and given the fact that he’s had a pre-seaosn with Aris, he’ll be ready to hit the ground running.

There’s also reported interest in his services though, so Wednesday would have to act fast.
