Sheffield Wednesday fans have got it totally wrong about one player, and the stats prove it

Sheffield Wednesday went into the 2024/25 campaign hoping to progress under the management of Danny Rohl.

It was imperative that the club avoided a start akin to last season but being totally honest, it couldn’t have been any worse than that.

Under Xisco Munoz the team looked hapless and he was sacked after a run of just two points taken from 10 games in the Championship.

Now, some positive recruitment in the summer has given Rohl every chance of being a success this season with Wednesday now picking up positive results.

One signing that did catch the eye was that of Max Lowe who swapped Sheffield United for the blue and white of Wednesday in the summer.

He checked in on a free transfer from the Blades and given where he’s come from it’s fair to say he’s got to go some way to prove himself.

Lowe has been forced to prove himself under Rohl and has only actually made eight appearances in the starting eleven.

Some fans had already started etching the writing on the wall but the statistics seem to dispell the myth that he’s not started well at Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday fans have got it wrong about Max Lowe

The 27-year-old is a player who has struggled with niggling injuries during his career but in that sense, it’s been a case of so far, so good at Wednesday.

Lowe returned to the starting eleven for the first time in three games on Friday night and helped the Owls secure a 2-1 win over Portsmouth.

He was rather impressive during that game and it’s worth a look at the statistics to assess how he’s really getting on at Hillsborough.

Who Scored showed that he won two tackles, three interceptions and also made two clearances during his 90 minutes on the pitch.

He also put in three crosses during the clash and playing regular football is what he needs to truly kick on at Wednesday.

Sofa Score also paints a solid picture across the course of the campaign when it comes to Lowe.

They have him in the top three Wednesday players when it comes to interceptions and key passes per game, whilst they also confirm that 88% of his passes across the campaign have been accurate.

Wednesday fans have to give Lowe proper time to shine

When Lowe was on loan at Nottingham Forest during 2021/22, he finally got a settled run in a team without injury restricting his progress.

At the City Ground, he helped the Reds to promotion and with the right level of backing from Rohl – and the fan base – he could become a very useful player.

Lowe is a former Blade and that does complicate things. However, there would be no better feeling than seeing the left-back flourish at Wednesday when he hardly lit up Bramall Lane.

The statistics perhaps prove that some of the criticism has been a little bit harsh and the hope will be that Lowe can now get a strong run in the team and prove himself properly to the fan base.
